oh my goodness, she really is a lovely, lovely dancer. The grace exudes from her very center, which is perhaps what makes her dancing look different. It doesn't feel like an add-on, but rather an outflow. Would love to see her dance in person!

This was fantastic, Jeffery. It is so in-depth and thorough and thought-provoking. I love the ending, you wrap it up so well.

And I absolutely loved this little golden nugget of a description: “to an almost Borges-like infinity.” — wonderful.

I'm so glad you liked it, Michael and thank you for your generous words. Much appreciated! I enjoyed writing this; it was a struggle to bring the material together but very encouraging to know it worked for you.

This is a wonderfully rich post, Jeffrey, and it's delightful to see the "key" in the person of your Yui-san who opened the world of ballet for you.

I'm wondering if I agree or disagree with your statement that art doesn't make us better? Enrich, of course - certainly not "better than" anyone else - but more engaged, more thoughtful, more connected to disparate ideas than we were before? Maybe.

There's only one book I kept from my university days, I read it from time to time, and understand perhaps 1% of what he says - Terry Eagleton's "Literary Theory" - and I'm pretty sure he thinks that art/literature is the new secular religion, though I'm pretty sure any truly coherent statements on the subject will have to wait for my next life. Great post!

Hi Troy, many thanks for the thoughtful comment! I'd agree that art can make us more thoughtful, perhaps more open to new ideas. I'd like to think so, anyway. And you are right, I took the idea about art becoming a religion from Terry Eagleton. I've lost my own copy of the book you mention, however. I used to enjoy reading him, though.

When I was living in New Jersey, I loved going into the city (I suppose you all m is by “the city” I meant the one and only New York City lol) to attend concerts, operas, and of course, ballets. As much as I love my current somewhat reclusive home in the Pacific Northwest mountains, I miss the cultural vibes of the big cities!

I know what you mean! I spent a year in an out of the way place, so getting to the theatre required major effort.

Thank you for sharing. It is an ugly, frightening, sorrowful world we are living in and art, in whatever forms it speaks to us, is a refugee and a source of hope.

Right? I'm hoping to see her dance in the Nutcracker this December. I can't wait!

Don Quixote—read it in both Spanish and English—and the ballet have been touchstones in my life and work. The connection is perfect in this essay. I don't know how you found me, but so glad you did! As an aside, do see what the professor wrote me in _(Re)Making Love_ the memoir's chapter 10 "Bliss"--links to all chapters appear in following chapters.

Thank you for your kind words. Great to find another fan of El Quijote. I think I came across you on the comments section of Garth Greenwell's excellent piece on Louise Glück.

I'll check out what the professor said!
